Abstract

A proportion of the sun's energy is, emitted as ultravi()let (UV) radi-ation or light. UV radiation is divided into three types, according to wavelength, which are UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C radiation Stratospheric ozone acts as a shield around the Earth, protecting it from the harmful UV­ B radiations reaching the surface of the planet. This is a vital issue for the preservation of the ecosystems in our planet. However, the damage in the ozone layer will continue for many years after stopping production and use of ODSs, by the industrial countries, the main producers and users of these ODSs, because of the atmospheric life times of many of these ODSs. The principle ODSs are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and methyl bIUn wJc.

Scientists believe that the depletion of the ozone layer is primarily linked to the CFCs. CFCs are not easily dissolved in rain water, and their use has witnessed huge increase over the last few decades, specially with the development in electrical appliances. Therefore, chlorine is occurring in rapidly increasing concentrations in the stratosphere, and acting as a chemical catalyst that deplete the ozone layer by changing the ozone molecules into normal oxygen_
