Study Of Vitamin D Supplementation On The Outcome Of The Icu Admitted Diabetic Vitamin D Deficient Patients With Severe Infection
Omnia Ahmed El Saadany;
Abstract
Vitamin D has long been known as sunshine vitamin, It is known to have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, Evidence is available linking vitamin D deficiency with bacterial and viral infections. Different studies have shown that deficiency of vitamin D could be linked to an altered immune system of patients with diabetes, Vitamin D insufficiency is a common global phenomenon. Its insufficiency is also reported to be common in hospitalized patients and particularly in critically ill patients.
The incidence of vit D insufficiency in critically ill patients has been reported to range from 26% to 82% Data regarding the relationship between 25(OH) D levels and outcome in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) are sparse with new reports suggesting the relationship of deficiency in 25(OH)D and an increase in mortality in the critically ill patients.
Several studies have reported on an inverse association between vitamin D levels in critically ill patients and severity of disease including length of ICU stay and mortality.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of vitamin D supplementation on different outcomes including the prognosis, morbidity and mortality of during the ICU
