Abstract

This work was planned to study the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies to BHV-1, BVD and PPR viruses in sheep and goats. 804 sheep sera samples and 492 goat sera samples were collected from different localities in Behera and Matrouh Governorates.

The sera were screened at a starting dilution of 1110 for the presence of neutralizing antibodies to BHV-1, BVD and PPR viruses using microtiter neutralization test. Neutralizing antibodies to BHV-1 were found in 50 out of
804 (6.2%) sheep sera tested while in goats 43 of 492 (8.7%) sera samples neutralized the BHV-1 virus indicating non-significant differences between sheep and goats in the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies to BHV-1 virus.
The mean antibody titers to BHV-1 was 23.00 ± 3.04 in sheep and 23.95 ±

3.46 in goats.

Concerning BVD virus, 32 (3.48%) of sheep sera and 18 (3.2%) of goat sera neutralized BVD virus at a dilution of 1110. The statistical analysis showed that the antibody titer to BVD in sheep (43.44 + 4.87) was
significantly higher than that of goats (25.56 ± 3.26).

On screening sheep and goat sera for antibodies to PPR virus at dilution
-
of 1110, 48 (5.97%), sheep and 46 (9.3%) goats were positive indicating

higher prevalence of PPR in goats than in sheep. The average antibody titers to PPR virus in sheep was 39.79 ± 3.92 while in goats it was 24.35 + 1.72.
