Synthesis, spectroscopic studies and different applications of some new metal complexes

Basma Ahmed Mahmoud Ismail;

Abstract

The present thesis deals with the synthesis of complexes of Ag(I), Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pt(IV) and U(VI) with the Schiff base, 1-(2-furylmethylene)-N-(3-phenylallylidene)methanamine (L), derived from the condensation of cinnamaldehyde and furfurylamine. The ligand and its complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic studies such as IR, UV–Vis, 1H NMR, fluorescence, mass spectra, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, XRD and thermal analysis.
The ligand (L) acts as a bidentate ligand, where it is coordinated to the metal through its nitrogen atom of the azomethine group and oxygen of the furan ring.
Conductance data show that the complexes are electrolytes of the type 1:1 for Ag(I), Mn(II), Ni(II) and Pt(IV) complexes and 1:2 for Cd(II) and U(VI) complexes except for those containing Cu(II) and Hg(II) which are non-electrolytes.
Mass spectra of the prepared complexes show the molecular ion peaks at m/z 433, 630, 383, 563, 704, 694,
