Abstract


Musca volitantes are small particles that occur in the vitreous gel as a result of congenital remn(lllts or coagulation of protein material, usually in association with vitreous liquefaction and they are received by the patients as mobile objects of different sizes, shapes and density, that fly, flit or flutter to and from the eye.
Musca volitantes IS a common complaint often heard by the

ophthalmologists from considerable number .of patients. It may be a symptom of a benign disease, but may also occur in serious vitreoretinal pathology, so it should be considered without delay for early management and prevention of blinding disease.
This study was plaruled to determine the different causes of musca

volitantes, and to ascertain its clinical importance as a symptom of some serious blinding disease.
This clinical prospective study was carried out on 120 cases complaining of musca volitantes. Of these cases 53 (44.2%) were males and 57 (55.8%) were females, and their ages ranged from 17 to 85 years. A full history was obtained from each patient who was also subjected to careful complete ophthalmic examination.
