ELECTROCHEMICAL REDUCTION OF SOME SELECTED CARBONYL COMPOUNDS AT METALLURGICAL AND ELECTRODEPOSITED CATHODES

Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of carbonyl compounds
Electrochemical reactions can be considered as

being of two main types :-

1- Electro.chemical oxidation (anodic) reaction.

2- Electrochemical reduction (cathodic) reaction.
The electrochemical reduction and· oxidation reactions cover a wide range of processes, from the
il
simplest ion-recharge reaction to the complex transfo

rmations fonning the basis of organic electrosynthesis.
;
The electrochemical reduction reactions have a greater usefulness which can be attributed to a number· of factors, some of them are the following:-
i) Most metals can be used as different cathode materials.
ii) During electrolysis, cathode materials are much less subjected to deteriorating factors such as passivation, corrosion, cracking and various types of damages.
iii) Cathode processes are considered to be highly reproducible compared to anodic ones. Moreover their results are usually easier to interpret.
