Abstract

In the present study the composition of the avian eggshell before and after hatching adopting some physical techniques , namely LIBS, EDS, and SEM has been investigated.
LIBS technique has been used to follow up the avian eggshell elemental composition before and after hatching. Stratigraphy of the shell is carried out to evaluate calcium concentration the shell thickness using the same spectroscopic technique. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) was used to confirm the previous results concerning the distribution of calcium through the shell thickness. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the relationship between layers of the eggshell before and after hatching. In addition, preliminary results have been obtained in a study of the effect of laser exposure of avian eggs prior incubation on the hatchability.

The results obtained can be summarized as follows:

1- Magnisum concentration is decreasing after hatching by about 60% in the average with respect to its the values before hatching via LIBS technique.
2- In the average, the decrease in the concentration of sodium after hatching was 30%.
It can be seen that the magnesium and sodium concentration decreased after hatching significantly (p
