Study of the Other Ear in Cases with Unilateral Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract


This study was carried out for patients presenting with unilateral.

Chronic otitis media including suppurative and non suppurative types with special attention to the other ear.
- 46 patients were included in this study

25 with atticoantral type of Chronic otitis media

18 with tnbotympanic type Chronic otitis media

3 with chronic secretory otitis media.

- The younger age groups are the most affected .

Their ages range between (18-27 ys) and between (7-17 ys).

- The most common mode of presentation was aural discharge.

- According to this study Chronic otitis media is unilateral disease as 63 %

of cases show no abnormality in other ear.

- This study revealed that the predisposing factors play an important role in production of Chronic otitis media via impainnent of eustachian tube function this is not essential to be bilateral , 63% of cases show. evident pathology in upper respiratory tract.
With audiological evaluation of contralateral ears found to be within

nonnal in majority of cases 69.5%. I
- Abnonnal radiological fmdings in contralateral mastoid air cell system is mainly evident in the fonn of partial and complete sclerosis in atticoantral type 64% of cases.most of these cases showe& evident pathology of upper respiratory tract wl:rile the remaining cases gave past history of upper respiratory tract troubles,tl:ris supports
enviromnental theory of arrest of pnewnatization.
