ASSESSMENT OF LIVER DISEASE PROGRESSION AMONG SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD MALIGNANCY WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS C

Abstract

hildren with cancer are at a high risk for hepatitis C virus infection due to immunosuppression secondary to chemotherapy and multiple transfusions of blood products during the course of the disease.
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has become a major health problem worldwide, particularly with high prevelance in Egypt. Many methods are used to assess liver fibrosis. Liver biopsy is an invasive method with risk of complication and interobserver variability. Fibroscan fulfill many desirable advantages of noninvasive method for staging liver fibrosis being inexpensive, accurate, reproducible, operator independent and can be used to follow up response of treatment.
The study aimed at assessment of liver disease progression among survivors of childhood malignancy with chronic hepatitis C virus infection using multimodality approach inducing transient elastography and its correlation with other parameters as FIB4, APRI and abdominal ultrasound.
The study included 51 patients with chronic HCV-infection who survived hematological malignancies and ended their chemotherapy. They were selected from The Pediatric Oncology Clinic at Ain Shams university and Hepatology clinic
