RADIATION APPLICATION ON SOME POLYMERIC INDUSTRIAL WASTE MATE'RIALS

KHALED FAROUK MAGHAWRY EL NEMR;

Abstract

In this part PTFE scrap was y-irradiated under atmospheric conditions for various doses (0 - 500 kGy ). DSC measurements have shown that:
1- The heat of fusion. L\.Hr has increased with irradiation dose and reached its maximum value at 150 kGy.
2- The heat of crystallization, L\.H, increased with irradiation dose, reaching its limiting value at 150 kGy.
3- L\.Hr > L\.H,

4- The number average molecular weight, M. decreased abruptly on irradiation by 50 kGy, after which it remained constant up to highest dose used, namely 500 kGy.
5- The melting and crystallization temperatures decreased very slightly, about -3.5 'C, on irradiation up to 500 kGy.

Therefore, it may be concluded that, for the kind ofPTFE scrap used in this investigation, an irradiation dose of 150 kGy would be quite sufficient to obtain the highest maximum induced change in M.as well as the crystallinity.

Second part

Radiation vulcanization ofNBR based composites were prepared whereby PTFE scrap was utilized as additive.
