Abstract

Cataract is the most major important cause of visual impairment in childhood, particularly in developing countries.

In pediatric. patient affected by either unilateral or bilateral cataracts, the decision of whether surgery is. indicated or not is
based on the estimated• level of visual acuity potential weighte d
•'
against the risks of the procedure. In addition, whether the cataract

is unilateral or bilateral. The strategy is to provide a clear retinal image as soon as possible to avoid irreversible amblyopia.

The child's eye differs from that of the adult. Anatomically, the child's eye exhibits increased structure pliability with decreased rigidity of sclera, leading to globe collapse. Optically, the child's eye is growing and changing in refractive power, and hence the difficulty in choosing the implant power. Postoperatively, children exhibit more active inflammatory and fibrotic responses than adults.•

Because of the above mentioned, cataract removal• .in children posses unique operative and postoperative challenges. '

I
Intraocular lens implantation is becoming increasingly

accepted as a means of optical rehabilitation of pediatric aphakia
