THE EFFECT OF INCORPORATION OF A COMONOMER INTO A COMPOSITE RESIN AND A COMPOMER ON CERTAIN BIOLOGICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Mohamed Salah Abd El Aziz;

Abstract

In this study the effect of incorporation of a newly introduced antibacterial monomer MDPB into a composite resin and a compomer was evaluated. This newlv introduced monomer, which is unleachable and can be integrated with the polymer network of the resin based restoratives, therefore would give the resin based restoratives some antibacterial properties without the danger of toxicity to the surrounding gingival tissues and with limited effects on the ecosystem of the oral microflora .
The properties evaluated were the compressive strength and the

results revealed decrease in the compressive strength of both composite and compomer upon incorporation of the MDPB comonomer. Tensile strength results showed that incorporation of the comonomer MDPB into composite resin would improve the tensile strength, while incorporation ofMDPB in compomer decreased the tensile strength. Surface roughness of both composite resin and compomer restorative materials was improved upon incorporation of the MDPB. The effect of MDPB incorporation into composite resin and compomer on acid production by streptococcus mutans was also evaluated and proved to be effective in inhibiting acid production by streptococcus mutans.
