MITRAL RlEG1URGITATION INDEX : AN ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC GUIDE

Neamat Mahmoud Abd Alia;

Abstract

The proper estimation of the degree of mitral regurgitation has a major• impact on decision making in the management patients with this disease.

Angiographic grading of MR was considered the reference standard , but this technique is highly variable, in addition to its s ubjective and invasive nature has limited its use and has diminished its rol e in the assessment of the severity of MR.

Hence, echocardiography is now considered to be the most commonly used non invasive method for detection, as wel l as for the estimation of MR severity, but there is no singl e precise method either qu antitati ve or qualitative. Quantitative methods are time consuming, h ence infrequently used in routine clinical practice. In addition, qualitative assessment carries a high degree of inter observer variability. We hypothesized that the systematic appl i cation of a combination of qualitative a nd quantitati ve echocard iographi c vari ables wou l d provide a n index of MR that wo u ld be more Reproducible than the use of each one of both sepa ratel y.
