Abstract
Photophysical and Photochemical studies of polycarbonate and diphenyle carbonate indicate similarities and di1Terences between the polymer and its monomer form .
From the electronic absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of DPC and polycarbonate , a conclusive proof of degradation of the polymeric matrix can be. detected .
The strong effect of laser irradiation on the electrical and optical properties of PC represents a great interest in using PC as a joule meter to the pulses ofNd:YAG laser .
Electron microscope results reveal that the damage is a bulk (not surface) damage. This is because the thickness of the sample is smaller than the reciprocal of the absorption coefficient of PC .
The surface morphology of the samples shows structural changes after irradiation with the laser pulses and there are some bright and dark regions which appear in the sample images.
The laser damage zones exhibited surface colors and textures changes that were easily visible to the unaided eye. The defects are not unifonn on the entire sample surface.
Laser irradiation causes a decrease in the conductivity which can be ascribed to the fonnation of the electrostatic fields impeding the carrier motion.
