Comparison between Extracapsular Cataraet Extraetion and Phacoemulsifieation in Mature Cataraet; Effect on the Corneal Endothelium.

Abstract

Phacoemulsification is considered the technique of choice for removing cataract from eyes with immature cataract all over the world. Many researches studied the technique and proven its safety on the endothelial cells and its efficacy through comparing phacoemulsification to the traditional ECCE.

All the researches were conducted on eyes with immature cataract as mature cataract is not frequently seen in developed countries and even considered to be rare. While in developing countries the percentage of eyes with mature cataract is considerably high.

The ann of our work is to find out is it safe to do phacoemulsification in eyes with mature cataract or better to shift to the traditional ECCE, through examining the effect of both techniques on the endothelial cells regarding its morphometric values (endothelial cell density, average endothelial cell size and coefficient of variation of cell size).

The study included 40 eyes of 40 patients having mature senile cataract and undergoing cataract extraction through ECCE in 20 eyes and phacoemulsification in the other 20 eyes.

The patient's data as regards personal history as age, sex, as well as full pre-operative ophthalmological examinations were taken. All the necessary examinations such as biometry and ultrasonography were done.
