Abstract
This thesis concerns of the design principles of structural concrete buildings under minor and moderate earthquakes The thesis consists of eight chapters; chapter one, it is an overview on seismicity all over the world discussing earthquakes • characteristics, origin, causes, properties, mechanisms, and types with particular emphasize on Egypt. This chapter aims to assure that Egypt lies in seismic regions. Chapter 2, it deals with the structure response to seismic excitation. This chapter aims; first to distinguish seismic effects among other dynamic loads, like wind loads. Second, to distinguish structure behavior under seismic effects than its behavior under static loads or other dynamic loads. Chapter 3, it deals with seismic simulation in design. It aims to assist designers in dealing with seismic effects by more than one procedure. Chapter 4, it deals with earthquake resistant structures and concerning of design from the aspect of philosophy, criteria, and methodology. This chapter aims to understand seismic design accurately and correctly. Chapter 5, in this chapter, basic design requirements for design of earthquake resistant structures are discussed. This chapter aims to scope view on default situations in the seismic provisions ofthe Egyptian code for loads (1993) as it misses vitally the mentioned requirements which may be considered as an essential part of design. Chapter 6, this chapter includes a parametric study on the empirical formulae that used by the Egyptian Code for loads (1993). These empirical formulae determine the fundamental period of the building and the equivalent base shear force due to earthquake loading. A Comparison between these formulae with those used by other codes and those from dynamic analysis was
