serum teptin levelIn Both Euthvroid State And In Thvroid Disorders

Esam Wadih Aiad;

Abstract

Leptin is a 16 KD protein secreted by the adipocytes and encoded by the OB-gene.

Serum leptin level is four times higher in females than males also; it is three folds higher in obese than lean subjects.

In humans half the amount of serum leptin level circulates as a free form and the other half bounds to plasma binding proteins

Leptin cross the BBB by a saturable transport mechanism where it binds with its receptors in hypothalamus.•

Leptin acts through its inhibitory effect on neuropeptide-Y (NPY) leading to loss of appetite, increased thermogenesis and increased metabolism.

The aim of this work is to study the serum leptin level in:-
1-Hypothyroidism patients
2-Hyperthyroidism patients
3-Lean control subjects
4-0bese control subjects

This study includes four groups acdo!'ding to BMI and thyroid function tests:-
1-Gt • oup 1: 20 patients with hypothv- roidism with BMI > 30 kg/m-.
2-G t• oup II: 20 patients with hyperthyroidism with BMI < 30 kg/m-.
3-Group III: 10 leas control subjects with euthyroid function.
4-Group IV: 10 obese control subjects with euthyroid function.
