Abstract


Nutrition is very important in determining a body response to factors that can cause disease if not resisted. No treatment will be totally effective if the nutritional state of the patient is inadequate or unbalanced.


The aim of the present study was to evaluate nutritional status of children less than 5 years of age. This study was carried out in two general hospitals in Port Said City. It was conducted from July 1999 to December in the same year. A total sample of 235 children was studied.


Two tools were designed to collect the necessary data.



First tool: Interview questionnaire which included two parts:

• Part 1: queries about demographic and socioeconomic data as age, gender, birth order, number of children in family, education and occupation of parents, family income and sanitary water supply.
• Part II: nutritional history and present food frequency.
