MANGANESE REMOVAL FROM WATER WITH SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE AND OTHER CHEMICALS
IBRAHIM WAGED SHAH MAZEN;
Abstract
The presence of significant amount of manganese in water can create several problems for the user such as: taste problems, discoloration of industrial products, staining household fixtures with brown or black color. Most of the treatment methods for manganese removal depend on the oxidation of manganese.
The most commonly used oxidizing agents are oxygen and potassium permanganate. Both chlorine and hypochlorites are effective oxidizing agents and have been used to oxidize manganese to its insoluble form:
The undertaken work aims to investigate suitable criteria for the application of hypochlorite as a proper mean for manganese removal from water.
Study concluded that the aeration only in not sufficient technique for the manganese removal because that the maximum removal efficiency for manganese does not exceed 20% by using aeration and the use of alum only also not efficient method for manganese removal because the decrease of pH when use.
