CLINICAL STUDY ON HUMAN FASCIOLIASIS

Abstract


This study included 50 patients attending the Institute of Research for Tropical Medicine and passing Fasciola eggs in their stool, 25 cases having schistosomiasis, 20 semm samples from cases of hydatidosis and 25 persons as healthy control.


The fascioliasis cases were divided into two groups. Group(!) included 20 cases that were treated with single oral dose of I 0 mgfkg. triclapendazole, while group (2) included 30 cases who were treated by two similar doses of the dmg, two week apart. Before treatment, all cases were subjected to clinical examination, abdominal ultrasnography, stool and urine analysis, blood picture determination, liver and kidney function tests, serological tests by IHA test (commercialy available kits) and ELISA using crude and Schistosoma -free Fasciola antigens. All the patients were followed up for 6 months after treatment The investigation were repeated at the second, fourth and sixth months post treatment.


It was found that 60 % of the patients suffered from right hypochondria! pam which was the most common symptom, other manifestation included abdominal distension (36%), abdominal colic (28%), fever (12%), anorexta (10%), pallor (6%), pruritis (4%), dyspepsia (43%), dizziness (2%), palpable liver (24%) and right hypochondria! tenderness (4%).
