Improvement of Wind Farms Dynamic Performance using STATCOM

Abstract

This thesis ‘Improvement of wind farms dynamic performance using STATCOM’ deals with some problems related to wind power in power systems, and how to solve these problems using Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). Due to the increase of wind power penetration, it has become necessary to address the problems related to wind farms in order to ensure stable power system. Out of many problems related to wind power in power systems, this thesis focus on two problems.
The first problem is the stability of wind farms under disturbances. Here, squirrel cage such as line, double line and triple line to ground faults and sudden loading. In each case, the performance of wind farm is monitored.
The second problem is the sub-synchronous (SSR) in wind farm. Here doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) wind farm is employed. SSR occurs due to the presence of series compensated transmission lines in addition to wind farm. (SSR) in wind turbine generators leads to electrical instability at sub-synchronous frequencies and turbine-generator shaft failures.
During investigating the two problems, the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is used along with (SCIG) and (DFIG) based wind farms to stabilize the voltage after disturbances and to mitigate of sub-synchronous resonance.
