ACUTE NORMOVOLEMIC HEMODILUTION USING DIFFERENT DILUENTS AND ITS EFFECTS ON HOMOLOGOUS BLOOD REQUIREMENTS

Naglaa Khalil Mohamed Khalil;

Abstract

Preoperative hemodilution has been introduced into surgery as an alternative to the transfusion of homologous blood due to the shortage in blood supply and the hazards of homologbus blood.
Attempting to determine the best dilutent, we have compared the effects of using either a colloid or a crystalloid fluid as replacement of the blood removed.

This study was carried out on 30 healthy patients ASA I-ll undergoing major elective operations with an estimated prediction of blood loss from 500-1500ml.

Patients with following criteria were excluded from the study::

1- Patients with history of ischaemic heart disease.

2- Hypertension.

3- Chronic renal failure.

4- Liver cirrhosis.

5- Bleeding disorders.

6- Current anticoagulant therapy .

7- Anaemic patients Hb <11 gm/dL.

These patients were clasified into two equal groups :

Group 1: (15 patients}:

The volume of blood withdrawn has been replaced simultaneously by infusion of 3 volume lactated ringer's solution of withdrawn blood in order to maintain normovolemia.
