Muriam Lotfy Mohamed Abdel Fattah;

Abstract

Induction of labour is an integral part of modern obstetric practice_, success is often difficult in a significant proportion of patients who have an unfavourable cervix.

Digital examination has long been the "gold" standard for evaluating the cervix before induction of labour.

However, digital examination of the cervix during pregnancy is subjective and has limitations and potential risks for premature rupture of membrane (Romero et :11., 1992).

PatcJ:5lm ct a/. ( 1991) uemonstrated differences between uigital and transvaginal ultrasonographic assessment of the cervix.

The aun of this study was assessment of accuracy of transvaginal ultrasonography 111 evaluation of the cervix before induced labour compared with digital examination.

This study included 43 pregnant women included with single viable cephalic fetus, intact fetal membranes and had a medical indication for induction of labour 111 spite of unfavourable cervix (Bishop score <4).
