Comparison of Two Individualized Learning Strategies on the Application of Nursing Process
Eman Mohamed Gaber;
Abstract
Education must be kept in touch with new technology, to teach it to the new generation, and to increase their knowledge, as well to improve their practice/pe1formance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of hvo individualized learning strategies (computer-assisted instruction program imd written simulation program) on the application of nursing process. An experimental research deign was used in the present study. A random sample of 90 students enrolled in medical surgical nursing course in Faculty of Nursing, Cairo University was recmited to achieve the aim of the study. The sample was divided into three equal groups (30 students in each group). Two
•study groups and, the third group was the control group. The hvo study groups were randomly assigned to the hvo individualized learning methods (computer program and written simulation program) and the third gr•oup was assigned to
traditional method of teaching (lecture/discussion). To achieve the aim of the /
study six hypotheses were formulated. Four instmments were used to collect
data: pre-post test, an observational checklist, opinionnaire sheet, and time sheet. T-tests were used to determine if there were differences behveen the hvo study groups and the control group. ANOVA test was used to examine relationships between the three groups. Also, percentile degree was done for the opinionnaire sheets to detem1ine the opinion of students regarding these methods of teaching. The study results indicated that the computer program indicates an improvement in students cot,'Tiitive as well as skills when applying nursing process than traditional method and written simulation. Also, no significant difference was observed behveen written simulation and traditional method in posttest and in applying nursing process. Also, the computer program was perceived by students as a valuable teaching method if they leam and have a basic knowledge of using computer. And, the written simulation was perceived by students that this method improved their knowledge of nursing process and it will be better if it is written with more simple language. Regarding the time, The students who used computer program took more time than written simulation as well as the lecture. The study recommended that replication of computer simulation and written simulation techniques in greater depth and in other areas by using different content for investigating these individualized methods of teaching should be done.
