A Comparative Study of Extra pleural Administration of Ropivacaine Versus Bupivacaine After Thoracotomy in • Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

Myriam Nimr Shafik;

Abstract

Extrapleural analgesia is an easy and effective technique in reducing post

-operative pain in infants. It also reduces the hormonal element of the stress response namely cortisol and blood glucose. Ropivacaine is as effective as bupivacaine in reducing pain . Ropivacaine is superior than bupivacaine in being less cardia and neurotoxic. The addition of clonidine to local anesthetics prolongs the duration and improves the quality of analgesia. Ropivacaine is superior than bupivacaine when added to clonidine due to its local vasoconstricting effect, thus reducing the amount of clonidine entering the circulation and its side effects.
