Abstract

SUMMARY
C
ardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Detection and treatment of risk factors for CV events are critical for improving health and longevity. Erectile dysfunction (ED) and Peripheral artery disease (PAD) are common in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been linked as a potential early indicator of both CAD and Peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Among patients with CAD, those with co-morbid PAD have worse CV outcomes, elevated risk for secondary CV events and death. This suggests that detection of patients with undiagnosed PAD might benefit from more aggressive medical therapy to decrease the cardiovascular event rate (myocardial infarction, stroke, cardiovascular death).
The aim of the study: to assess the value of Post MI erectile dysfunction as a predictor of underlying PAD.
The study included: 100 male patients who had myocardial infarction within the preceding 6 to 12 months and assessed erectile dysfunction by SHIM questionnaire to be < 22 then ABI was measured to diagnose underlying PAD.
