THE ROLE OF THE OTOENDOSCOPE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF RETRACTION POCKETS OF THE TYMPANIC MEMBRANE

Baher Mohamed Badr El-Din Ashour;

Abstract

The use of the otoendoscope is beginning to gain popularity alongside conventional microscopic techniques in the diagnosis and management of various ear diseases. Retraction pockets of the tympanic membrane are a common and troublesome condition which faces the otologic surgeon. The treatment of retraction pockets remains controversial ranging from medical treatment to more elaborate tympanic membrane reinforcement procedures. The use of the otoendoscope may help the otologic surgeon to better identify cases amenable to minimally invasive surgery, it is also valuable during surgery to verify complete dissection of the pocket prior to grafting. Another important role of the otoendoscope is the postoperative follow-up and phot graphic documentation of these cases. The role of the otoendoscope in the management of this condition will be assessed in the following study.
