SUBTALAR ARTHRITIS

Abstract

The subtalar articulation is the major and most important joint of the

foot.
I
It consists of two components, the talocalcaneal or subtalar joint, plus I
the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid that comprise the transverse tarsal I
joint. I
I
Here we discuss the subtalar arthritis in the following chapters:
1- Anatomy of the subtalar complex I
2- Biomechanics of the subtalm• complex I
3- Pathology of subtalar arthritis I
4- Diagnosis I
5- Management
I
It is important to discuss the anatomy of the subtalar complex in the I
..
form of skeletal and articular anatomy, as all structures in the subtalar
. complex can be affected in case of mthritis. I
I
Ir1 generally the axes of motion of the subtalar complex. are fairly I
parallel to each other in a horizontal plane. The main motion about the I

subtalar joint is that of inversion and eversion.

The overall motion will be changed when anatomic or pathologic I
changes affect the parallelism of the axes or when one or more of the I

joints becomes limited. I
I
Subtalar arthritis can be grouped into six broad classifications: I
