Abstract
A rapid I increase of elderly all over the world is due to a decreased death rate

and increase :life expectancy. In addition to the elderly are more vulnerable to

physical, emotional and socioeconomic problems that place them at risk of

malnutrition nd may require special attention to health promotion and maintenance
I
(Eliopoulos, I?90 ; \VHO, 1994).

Of pati,ents admitted to hospitals 35-55 % are malnourished on admission;
I
25-30% more become malnourished during the stay (Stanfield and Hui, 1997). In
addition Gro ner et al., (1996) noted that in later years, there is highly prevalent
I
threats to nutritional status and more than one third of hospitalized elderly are at risk
I
of malnutritidn.

The nhtrition sound play an important role in the medical care of hospitalized

elderly pati nts. Nutrition status can be affected by modifiable (controllable) risk
factors non- odifiable (uncontrollable) risk factors and predisposing factors such as

eating pattern, multiple medication used, and Diet Modification, such as eat age,
I
I
gender, education, Marital status, and socioeconomic status predisposing factor Such
I
as illness.

This study was carried out in health insurance departments from different our

hospitals "'ihich are Shebin El-Kom teaching Hospital, University hospital Health

insurance Hospital, and El-moalemen Hospital. The sample included 100 hospitalized

elderly pattents (Age above 60 years old, both sexes, conscious) and 100 nurses

dealing wit)l the same patients in the same hospital.
