Abstract


SUMMARY
T
his is a case control study included 50 non diabetic CKD patients not on dialysis (30 males, 20 females) with age (range 18-65 years), mean duration of CKD 21.92 ± 17.92 months (Range 4.0-84.0 months).
The patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of nephrology and internal medicine department, Ain shams university hospitals. The study included 50 Non diabetic CKD patients & 25 healthy volunteers aged from 18 years to 65 years. All subjects were subjected to full clinical history, examination & laboratory assessment.
Patients were devided into two groups Group I: 25 patients (14 stage-3 CKD, 11 stage-4 CKD), Group II: 25 patients (CKD stage-5) not on dialysis and 25 healthy volunteers as control group.
Specific tests reflect parasympathetic damage as heart rate response to deep breathing, heart rate response to valsalva maneuver & immediate heart rate response to standing & One test reflects sympathetic damage as blood pressure response to standing which were used to determine CAN.
The patients were categorized as "normal" if all the tests was normal; with "Early parasympathetic" if one of the three tests of parasympathetic function was abnormal; with "definite parasympathetic" if two or more of the three tests of parasympathetic function were abnormal; and with "combined
