Study of Demographic and Clinical Data of Patients Admitted to El Mahala Chest Hospital in the Period between January 2011 to December 2012

Abstract


Diseases of the respiratory system are an important public health problem in all countries.
The occurrence of respiratory system diseases varies widely wound the world. Among children under 5 years of age, about 33% of all deaths were due to acute respiratory infections.
Chronic diseases of the respiratory tract also are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among adults.
Aim of the Work:
The aim of the work was to study demographic and clinical data of all the in patients admitted at El Mahala chest hospital in the period from January 2011 till the end of December 2012.
Patients and Methods:
Patients
This study included the total number of in patients admitted to El Mahala chest hospital in the period from January 2011 to December 2012 Those patients were suffering from variable chest diseases.
Methods:
1. Choice of the patients of the study:
The study was carried out upon the inpatients admitted to El Mahala chest hospital in the period from January 2011 to December 2012. The study included all patients admitted to the hospital in this period with various chest diseases.
2. Collection of data:
The data of this study was collected from archives of the hospital and data sheets of the patients.
Each patient was investigated for the following:
1. Age.
2. sex
3. Occupation.
4. residence
5. special habits
6. Brief symptoms.
7. Co –morbidities (HTN-DM-Cardiac disease –Hepatic disease).
8. Diagnosis on admission.
9. treatment
10. Final diagnosis.
11. End result of the treatment of the patient.(outcome)
12. Number of admissions.
Results:
The total number of the in patients admitted to El Mahala chest hospital in the studied period was 10027 in general department and 935 patients in economic department. The most common diagnosis was bronchial asthma in economic department (24.4% of the studied cases and the most common diagnosis in general department were chest infection and pneumonia (29.4%).
It was found that males take the upper hand compared to females as regard different diseases, the most common age group in both departments was (46-65)years ,nearly 80% of patients were living in industrial areas ,most patients in general department had no occupation while 53% of patient in economic department were white coaler and 5.99% were working in Egypt company and it was found also that 31% COPD patients and 25% of patients with cancer lung were smokers.
It was found that the most common clinical complains of the admitted patients were cough, expectoration and shortness of breath and the common treatment used were antibiotics, bronchodilator, and corticosteroids.
