Femtosecond laser as a new• technique in ophthalmology

Sherif Fakhry Magdy Helmy;

Abstract

The femtosecond laser is a focusable infrared laser, which utilizes pulses in the femtosecond (10- 15s) duration rang, with a wave length 1053nm. A unique feature of the femtosecond laser is its ability to produce tissue disruption at very low energy settings, producing minimal inflammation or collateral tissue damage.

FSL-assisted flap creation in LASIK is an advanced form of LASIK that uses the new femtosecond laser which able to create precise flap thickness, configurations, angulations and edges. It also able to create flaps in eyes with different corneal and I or orbital configurations with a standard deviation (SD) greater than ± 25 to ±40 um

The FSL technology can be used in the treatment of progressive keratoconus by making small incisions in 5-8 seconds to create channels for the ring segments. It avoids many complications of manual dissection as tunnel irregularities, anterior and posterior perforations during channel creation, extension of the incision toward the central visual axis or limbus, asymmetric or shallow or uneven placement of the intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS), decentration, introduction of epithelial cells into the channel during the
