Management of Post-Lasik Ectasia

Shaimaa Zaki Mohamed Mahmoud;

Abstract

The cornea is a transparent avascular tissue that forms together with the precorneal tear film the major refracting surface for the eye.With corneal refractive surgery, the corneal overall strength is reduced owing to tissue removal.post surgical ectasia is believed to result when tensile strength is insufficient to counteract the
intraocular pressure.

LASIK is one of the most widely performed ophthalmic surgical procedures in the world.As any surgical procedure, complications can occure as intraoperative, early postoperative and late postoperative.

Postoperative corneal ectasia is a progressive steepening and thinning of the cornea which reduces uncorrected and often BCVA.

Prevention of iatrogenic keratectasia requires identifying and refining known risk factors, screening high risk patients including, clinical examination, corneal topography, pachymetry and new technology to identify abnormal cornea.

Management of corneal ectasia following lasik include restoration of vision by optical means to obviate astigmatism, such as use of contact lenses, and in more

severe cases. Correction or restoration of integrity of the cornea by interventional means including collagen cross linking, intracorneal ring segments, conductive keratoplasty and lamellar or penetrating keratoplasty.
