Abstract

Aging is a general physiological process that is poorly understood; it may be defined as a decline in the functional capacity with time resulting from a relative increase in catabolic over anabolic process of the whole body. There are many theories to explain the aging process.

Gastric emptying IS a highly regulated process reflecting the in!egration of the propulsion forces of proximal gastric tone (fundic) and distal (antral) contractions and the inhibition of pyloric and duodenal contractions.

There are many factors that affect gastric emptying such as gastric and intestinal distention, osmolarity, acid concentration, fats, amino acid, body size, emotional condition and fever.

Many methods are used to measure the gastric emptying, some are mvas1ve as the manometry others are non invasive as scintigraghy , cutaneous electrogastrography (EGG), Breath 12Co2, ma!,rnetic resonance imaging and gastric ultrasound.

Real time ultrasonography enable quantitative assessment of gastric emptying of a standardized solid-liquid meal and serial quantitative measurements are performed after ingestion of a meal in order to study motor activity and accommodation of the stomach to meal and its gastric emptying rate.
