POSTKERATOPLASTY ASTIGMATISM

Teresa Kamal Asaad;

Abstract

For the cornea to be a good refractive medium both the clarity of the cornea and the corneal curvature are basic contributing factors.
For good visual outcome thus it is important to consider all the steps

during keratoplasty carefully, starting with the proper choice of donor •

tissue takinginto consideration the donor age ,the donor topography

During the course of surgery the following problems were common happenings , these include ; the decentration of the donor and recipient trephination, vertical tilt of the trephine, distortion of the corneal edge by the trephine, dishannony between the donor and recipient topography and graft torsion , the different suture teclmiques .

In conclusion the • causes of postkeratoplasty astigmatism are multifactorial and the proper studies of this causes will help to reduce the resultant astigmatism. On the other hand the residual astigmatism can be dealt with .i1sing different invasive and non invasive techniques best of which was . found to be laser surgery as these have proved to cause a tremendous decrease in the degree of astigmatism with the least hazards and thus improving the visual outcolhe.
