NOHA MOHAMED MAMDOUH MAHMOUD;
Abstract
Nearly 100 million women around the world use the IUDs as a method of contraception. The copper-bearing devices are increasing in popularity and the copper-T 380 is the most commonly inserted device in Egypt.
The intrauterine devices may be medicated or non medicated. The non-medicated IUDs consist of inert material (plastic). On the other hand, in medicated IUDs, materials are added to the device to increase its effectiveness and to reduce its side erf"ecls. Materials added are copper and silver. Hormones also added to the device as in levonorgestrel
releasing device.

Many complications are attributed to the use of IUDs. As expulsion, the incidence of which per IUD insertion varies from less than 1 to 7% in the first year of use. The great majority of expulsion occur in the first post-insertion menses. expulsions are classified as partial or complete and unnoticed or noticed. Correct insertion technique with IUD placed up to the fundus is believed to reduce the incidence of expulsion.
