ANESTHETIC MANAGEMENT OF ORTHOPEDIC CANCER PATIENTS UNDERGOING ALLOGRAFT SURGERY

Abstract


Cancer is the second cause of death exceeded only by heart diseases. One of eVery tivc cancer victims die from the effects of their diseases. Cancer results (i•om accumulation of mutations in genes that regulate cellular proliferation.


Allografts avoid the need for donor site (Characterized by postoperative discomfort, sacrifice of normal structures, etc) and are available in unlimited supply and any anatomic shape. Available clinical informations suggest that 70 to 80% of orthopedic allograft surgeries are associated with high success
rate.



Clinical tests to detect preoperatively side effects associated with treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs may be helpful, as anticancer chemotherapy may cause a number of side effects which have greatest implication on the anesthetic management.


One of the major complications after orthopedic surgeries is venous thromooembolism. Without prophylaxis, venous thrombosis develops in 40 to 80% of orthopedic patients. Fatal pulmonary embolism occurs in 0.2 to 13% of patients.
