STUDY OF THE PREVALENCE OF PORTAL VIEN THROMBOSIS IN PATIENTS WITH HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA
A many Saleh Abd El Aziz El Yamany;
Abstract
This study was carried out on fifty patients of proven HCC by sonographic data, high level of AFP >450 ng/dl and liver aspiration cytology when needed.
The patients were . examined by Doppler sonography to detect the prevalence of portal vein thrombosis and to differentiate benign from malignant thrombi.
Doppler examination revealed portal vein thrombosis in 20% of HCC
patients and 10% of cirrhotic patients.
There was no significant correlation between the presence of portal vein thrombosis and occurance of hematemesis , low platelet count, ascites, Child' C class.
Pulsatile flow was the diagnostic criterion for malignant PVT and continuous flow for benign thrombus.
Malignant PVT in HCC patients shows higher percent (14%) than benign PVT (6%).
