Comparative Study between Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) and Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) Using intraoperative TEE in Assessment of Left Ventricular Contractility in Patients with Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Abstract

Cardiac function is crucial for cardiac surgery. Unfortunately, mortality remains very high in patients with poor preoperative cardiac function, long surgical times, complicated or difficult surgical procedures or incomplete correction of the malformation. It is therefore necessary to find novel approaches to assess the cardiac function accurately, especially those patients who are presented by mitral valve regurgitation in whom the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) method usually underestimates the presence of left ventricular dysfunction and remains normal in most patients.
Thus, we considered evaluating the myocardial performance index (MPI) method, previously described by Tie; 1995 as regarding its accuracy and independence of being affected by the regurgitant volume in mitral regurgitation.
We found that it is also independent of the volume status of the patient, this is of advantage during the intraoperative period when changes in heart rate, volume status and blood pressure are common.
It is also proven by previous studies that diastolic failure or dysfunction is an independent predictor of patient
