Application of Remote Sensing Techniques, Geographical Information Systems and Analytical Models, for the Pelagic Fisheries Management in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt
Asaar Salah Hassan El-Sherbeny;
Abstract
Pelagic fishes, caught by purse seine in the Gulf of Suez, represent about 67 % (GAFRD, 1999 – 2012) of the total annual fish production from the Gulf; hence they contribute to a major fishery in Egypt. Previous attempts to assess and manage fish stocks, taking account only of their biology as well as their population dynamics, and ignoring the environmental variability, in addition, RS and GIS are proven to be valuable and promising tools, in the fisheries resources management, conservation and exploitation. So, the present study suggests an approach for using analytical models, as well as, satellite remote sensing techniques, and geographical information systems for the assessment of pelagic fisheries resources in the Gulf of Suez; for their sustainable use and development.
