STUDY OF VITAMIN D AMONG OLD ELDERLY EGYPTIAN POPULATION
Erinie Salem Sidhom;
Abstract
Elderly people are prone to falls and fractures. This risk is augmented by many factors, including visual impairment, neurological disorders, orthopaedic disabilities and drug side effects. Serious deficiency of vitamin D is common among elderly house bound people in old people's nursing homes and long-stay wards and has been identified as an important public health problem here in Egypt and worldwide (Venning, 2005).
Frailty has a multifactorial basis that includes age-related physiological changes and their interaction with coexistent disease states. At its extreme, it ends in a "failure to thrive" that presages death (Hamerman, 1999).
Vit. D supplementation is effective for fall prevention and improving balance. Given that vit. D appears to play an important role in both muscle and nervous tissue maintenance with aging (Morley et al., 2005).
