Procalcitonin as a Predictor in Sepsis

Diana Gamal Amine Ayoub;

Abstract

Introduction: Sepsis is a leading cause of death in critically ill patients despite the use of modern antibiotics and resuscitation therapies. The diagnosis of sepsis and evaluation of its severity is complicated by the highly variable and non-specific nature of the signs and symptoms of sepsis.Biomarkers can have an important place in this process particularly PCT because they can indicate the presence or absence or severity of sepsis and can differentiate bacterial from viral and fungal infection, and systemic sepsis from local infection.
Objectives: This review aims to highlight the role of Procalcitonin as a predicror of sepsis and its effect and role during the disease as a guidance of treatment.
Data sourses:Medline databases (PubMed, Medscape, Science Direct) and all materials available in the Internet till 2017.
Study Selection: This search presented 135 articles. The articles studied the importance of Procalcitonin in diagnosis and treatment of serious bacterial infection and sepsis and to purify the most recent studies in this field.
Data extraction: If the studies did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, they were excluded. Study quality assessment included whether ethical approval was gained, eligibility criteria specified, appropriate controls, and adequate information and defined assessment measures.
Conclusion: In the present study, PCT appeared to be a more accurate diagnostic parameter for differentiating between patients suffering from SIRS and those with sepsis. Routine determination of PCT may improve management of patients, for example by preventing the use of unnecessary antibiotics that are known to select resistance strains.
Key words: Procalcitonin in sepsis, Biomarkers of sepsis.
