TREATMENT AND PROGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER WITH BONE METASTASES ONLY AS FIRST SIGN OF DISTANT RELAPSE

Abstract


This retrospective study was carried out at the
' radiotherapy department , National Cancer Institute , Cairo
Lmiversity during the period between January 1991 to December 1998 . it included female breast cancer patients with bone metastasis only as the first site of distant metastasis .

The study included 702 patients , 204 patients
(29.1%) presented with bone metastasis from the start (at
•the time of diagnosis of breast cancer) 469 patients ( 66.8
%)developed bone metastasis after surgery and adjuvant treatment, 29 patients ( 4.1 % ) developed bone metastasis after surgery with no adjuvant treatment given .

The median follow-up duration for all patients was
26 months.

After close study of these patients we can conclude the following :

The incidence of development of visceral metastases in the studied group was ( 29.6 % ) it was also influenced by these six factors

as:

Age of the patient at the time of first presentation of breast cancer as : The highest incidence was found in the group of patients aged below 35 years at the time of first presentation , followed by the grqup aged between 35
- 50 years , the least incidence was in the group aged more than 50 years .
