SURVEY OF DEFECTS OF ORANGE IN EGYPT THAT LIMIT THEIR ACCEPTABILITY FOR EXPORTATION AND WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Abd El-Moety Salama Bedeir Mohamed;
Abstract
This study was carried out during 2002/03-2003/04 seasons to determine the export ratio and the different defects which reduce orange acceptability in Egypt to export. This study was carried out in the field and in the packing houses and exportation of citrus fruits. This work was carried out in two experiments as follows:
Experiment 1:
This experiment was carried out on 25 years old Washington navel orange trees, budded on sour orange root-stock in a private orchard, Edfina, Behiera Governorate, to study the effect of application of some growth regulators on the different defects that make the fruits non exportable. The treatments with GR were as follows:
1. Treatment 1: spray with 5 ppm GA 3 + 2% KN03 at 90-100% petal fall.
2. Treatment 2: spray with 300 ppm NAA at 8.10 mm fruit diameter.
3. Treatment 3: spray with 20 ppm GA3 at 30-40 mm fruit diameter.
4. Treatment 4:spray with water (control).
The Washington navel orange fruits were harvested at two different dates (half tree per each date), one month between the two dates. The fruits were examined and separated into exportable and non-exportable according to EC and USA standards for grading of oranges. The percentage • of different defects in the non-exportable fruits were determined.
