THE PROXIMALLY AND DISTALLY BASED PERONEAL ARTERY FLAP An anatomical and clinical study

Yassear Elsayed Abd Elgawad;

Abstract

The aim of this work was to assess the anatomical distribution of the peroneal artery and its branches and to evaluate the use of the peroneal artery flap for coverage of soft tissue and/or bone defects in the middle and lower thirds of the leg.

The anatomical study was carried out on twenty human preserved and fresh cadaveric lower limbs (14 preserved and 6 fresh), where careful dissection was done in each lower limb to assess the anatomical
distribution of the peroneal artery and its branches after cannulation and
. 0

injection of the femoral artery by red latex.

The clinical study was carried out on twenty patients of both sexes

and of different ages with soft tissue defects and/or exposed bone in the

! I j
' ' middle and lower thirds of the leg requiring flap reconstruction.
u
Patients were classified into two groups A and B. Patients in group
u A (10 patients) were managed using proximally-based peroneal artery
u flap while group B (10 patients) were managed using distally-based

il peroneal artery flap.
