Abstract

The detailed growth and development of the fetal organs cannot be accurately detected clinically. So, serial U/S examinations allow detailed information about the fetal organs and environment as well as the placenta (position,
•development and maturity). Thereby, any problem during pregnancy can be accurately diagnosed and managed
'accordingly giving best chances for the fetus and mother.

Estimation of fetal maturity includes the definition of gestational age and observation of groWth parameters of the fetus during the course of pregnancy. It also includes, observation of different fetal organs by defming their sonographic anatomy, their development, function; the fetal activity and placental maturity.
'" '
During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the first structure seen on U/S examination is the gestational sac at about 5 weeks• of gestation. When the embryo can be seen, the crown-rump length is obtained. This measure is the most important and commonly used diameter between 6th -12th weeks of gestation to define the gestational . age
. accurately. .,
