Abstract

Sixty patients (thirty females and thirty males) with mitral valve disease (thirty-five patients with mitral regurge and twenty-five patients with mitral stenosis) were admitted to undergo elective mitral valve repair or mitral valve replacement.

Out of the thirty-five patients with mitral regurge, thirty two patients (91%) underwent mitral valve repair and three patients (9%) underwent mitral valve replacement based on the TEE findings and the surgeon's decision. There was no paravalvular leak detected by the TEE done after CPB. Four patients (11.4%) had second run CPB for re-repair of the mitral valve due to inadequate repair detected by the post pump TEE.

Out of the twenty-five patients with mitral stenosis, five patients (20%) had mitral valve repair and twenty patients (80%) underwent mitral valve replacement based on the TEE findings and the surgeon's decision. Three patients (12%) had paravalvular leak proved by the post CPB TEE that needed a second run CPB to correct the paravalvular leak. No paravalvular leak was detected after the second run CPB.
