Value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of hip problems in Egyptian adult patients and its correlation with clinical findings

Tawfik Abdou Ahmed;

Abstract

Hip pain is a common complaint in adults with many possible causes including articular, extra-articular and referred pain causes.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of hip problems among Egyptian adult patients , and to correlate US findings with the patients' clinical findings .

Seventy-five patients with articular and extra-articular causes of hip pain constituted the material of this study. All patients were subjected to a full clinical examination. Evaluation of hip joints with plain radiography and sonography was performed for all patients. Also, MRI was performed for the hips of osteonecrosis cases (n=14).

Our study revealed that US is much more sensitive than plain radiography in detecting hip effusion and/or synovitis. Also, US helped in the diagnosis of periarticular soft tissue masses . However, US is not reliable for the diagnosis of osteonecrosis. MRI is highly sensitive and specific for diagnosing osteonecrosis.
