Assessment of Growth in infants with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Abstract


Our aim was to assess the growth parameters in infants with CAH from their first presentation till the end of their first year of treatment.
This study was a retrospective study that included 70 cases with CAH diagnosed and assessed at the Pediatrics Endocrinology Clinic, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University. Data at diagnosis and follow up visits was collected from the records of the patients and included: medical history, general examination (anthropometric measures, blood pressure and genital assessment), therapeutic history (hydrocortisone, fludrocortisne and daily oral saline therapy), salt wasting crises, hospital admission, surgical correction, serum electrolytes, hormonal analysis and imaging.
The results of study showed that:
• The commonest form of CAH was SW-21-OH-deficiency and the commonest sex was female sex.
• The mean age at diagnosis was 46±6.87 days with a range of 1-212 days.
• The commonest presenting feature of patients was ambiguous genitalia (52.86%).
• The mean age of occurrence of the first salt losing crisis was59.41±8.26 days with a range of 3-188 days.
