Comparative Studies on Rabies and Bovine Ephemeral Fever Viruses
Ayman Said Emam EI-Habbak;
Abstract
Rabies is one of the most dangerous viral diseases affecting all worm blooded animal species and man. It is mainly transmitted through biting of rabied animal to another healthy one or man and usually ends dramatically by death of the affected host.
Bovine ephemeral fever is also viral disease affecting cattle and buffaloes causing great economic losses due to the sharp decrease in milk and meat production in addition to the expensive treatment trials. It is mainly transmitted by blood sucking insects.
The two diseases are caused by two viruses related to the family Rhabdoviridae, but rabies virus belongs to genus lyssa virus while bovine ephemeral fever virus belongs to genus ephemero virus. Many studies were carried out to discusses the antigenic relationship between the v1ruses.
The present study aimed to answer some questions about such relation through the application of some tests used for diagnosis and immune assay of the two diseases.
The applied experiments revealed that:
1- All suckling and adult mice, rats, hamsters, and Guinea pigs were found to susceptible for rabies virus while suckling animals were the only susceptible for bovine ephemeral fever virus.
2- The titer of rabies virus was increased by serial passage in the brains of used laboratory animals while that of bovine ephemeral fever virus was decreased by the 3rd passage in such animals.
